Everything russian

The other day I received these stunning images by Olya Ivanova. I have never been to Russia but it is on my list of places to visit. Her images capture Russia, just the way I imagine it - which makes me want to go there even sooner. I love Russian writers and judging by the submissions I received from Russia, there are as many great photographers out there. Of her project Olya says: "Gorelovka is small village in the middle of taiga in 800 km from Novosibirsk, Russia. This place is hard to find even in Google Map. That's why it is the best place to escape and hide. Many years ago Christian Old Believers came here to avoid church reform. Then 'kulaks' (wealthy peasant) chose this place to escape from Soviet rule. Now many 'new world antagonists' came here to live without passports, Internet, personal numbers and government. I shot the traces of several generations of people that were forced into hiding here from the pursuit of the State."

March is going to be a very busy month. I am preparing my work for an upcoming "studio opening" - where I will present a couple of my new projects. Along with that, I started designing the upcoming online version of UYW and also the print version and all of this is due on the 1st of April. The blog is also undergoing a redesign thanks to the kind help from Joost Markerink. So, please forgive me if it will be quiet here, but I promise I will delight you with links & news regularly on facebook.

Fragile places

I am utterly in awe with Joni Sternbach's images. My list of things to learn is long, but one day I will find the money to learn the wet-plate collodion process.

Of her series "Abandoned" Joni says: "My photographs over the recent years have embraced the traditions of landscape, seascape, and architecture. The human imprint on these views is what concerns me. I search out relics and ruins reflecting that imprint to reference the past and our history. Working with a large format wet-plate camera, I scout locations that are close to or directly on the water. It is at the edge of the land and sea that the mystery of an abandoned past is revealed. Structures that have long ago lost their functionality are now emblematic of a more primitive and lost time. These views/photos represent the last stand, the human effort as can be most poignantly seen through decay and the return to nature. Illuminating this fragile place, I intend to draw attention to these sites and their contradictory nature.
The wet-plate collodion process, widely used in 1860’s, has a profound relevance to this body of work. Ironically this process frequently documented the dawn of the industrial revolution and its settings. To employ it now creates a visual thread. I use period lenses and original chemical formulas to reference this history. I also maintain a very spare and contemporary aesthetic to differentiate my work from what has come before me. I have mixed up the standards that my forefathers have used as well. I shoot landscapes with portrait lenses and prefer lenses that don't completely cover the size glass I have chosen, giving my pictures a vignetted effect. All of these choices are meant to show the viewer a little more of the craft than is customarily expected. The hand poured collodion process produces unique and instantaneous positives on a glass plate (ambrotypes) or tin (ferrotypes) as well as negatives. The entire process is done on location, with a portable darkroom.".

UYW goes to print

I have dreamed about it for the last year, have fretted about it for the last few months and here it is - I say it - UYW goes to print*. I am actually doing it. That was scary - I guess not just writing it, but putting it out there... So artists are invited and as I wait for them to confirm, I ordered some paper and book samples.
No I have not received a grant to print UYW (one has to write these grants first and they are soooo much work, but will get back later to this), nor have I won in Lotto or had a project which paid me handsomely - wish. No what motivated me was this. The Foto Book Festival sounds like a great opportunity to show UYW to a new audience, and once again - no I do not expect to win, but one can always dream and put it out there, expecting nothing but hoping for the best. I live with a yoga master - hence my contentment.... just made myself giggle. Anyway, if nothing happens at the book fair I will look for other ways to bring you a printed copy. I am not sure what this year will bring, but the year of the rabbit sounds rather exciting.
Ok, so here is my dilemma. I have invited 11 artists and think of including myself in the book. So far, I have always been of the opinion that if I curate - I do not include myself, but these days I think - that if I do not include myself (every so often), how or when do I get my own work out there? (And yes I included myself in the Jan 2010 issue, but that was because an artist confirmed and then never sent the images, and at that stage I didnt have anyone else lined up). I opened up a discussion page for this and am very interested to hear your thoughts.

* Initially I will print only 5 copies - with the paper and quality I am after, and then we'll dream further.

Tread softly

Today I came across Matt Eich on Lauren Henkin's blog. "Carry Me Ohio” is a touching series of the daily struggles poor people encounter. The economic downturn keeps people unemployed, hungry and homeless and it doesn't help that this area has one of the biggest poverty rate, but behind all of that - we get to experience a very personal story about that place and it's strong people. Matt is currently showing his work at the Blue Sky Gallery, so if you are in Portland, make sure to drop in and have a look.

A rare look

Last week I came across Zdenek Tmej's "The Alphabet of Spiritual Emptiness" published in 1946. At first I was just drawn to the images, but then I read that these images were taken inside a Nazi labor camp in Breslau, Poland during World War II. I was simply amazed that Tmej, a Czech citizen was allowed to photograph and keep his images. While working for the Nazis, Tmej managed to make the most of his experience and transformed his surrounding in the most sensitive and elegant way. This just reminds me again that beauty is always there - one just needs the vision to see it.

UYW 13 online

These days we are constantly busy and life is hectic. There are many things to fill the day and as many adventures to be explored. As fine art photographers we need to find the quiet moments to notice the mundane in a new perspective. To follow the light, to be able to stop and observe. From walking the streets of London, to following bathers, finding discarded objects and usually unnoticed moments, by looking at our surroundings & environment. We are all drawn to different aspects of every day life. As photographers we try to preserve the memory of an experience.
This issue highlights the different styles of five photographers, who while different, are in some way concurrently pulled together by their unparalleled memories.

I have been meaning to post these images By Dieter de Lathauwer for a while, but never got around to it. These images are from his series "l'introduction à l'aventure du rêve lucide" (Introduction to the adventure of the lucid dream). I have tried, but I am certain that I can not find words any better than Arthur Schopenhauer's: "How very paltry and limited the normal human intellect is, and how little lucidity there is in the human consciousness, may be judged from the fact that, despite the ephemeral brevity of human life, the uncertainty of our existence and the countless enigmas which press upon us from all sides, everyone does not continually and ceaselessly philosophize, but that only the rarest of exceptions do." Dieter's images have a sense of wonder about them. There is a certain authenticity in his image making, that is theatrical and fictional at the same time.

Roaming to find the light

A couple of weeks ago I received an email from Koichi Nishiyama a japanese artist and photographer sharing his images. It came to no surprise that I had seen his images already and had marked him on my ever increasing list to contact in the near future. I was very impressed by his series "Nowhere" and here is his statement about this work.

"There was a forest near the house where I lived when I was a child.
When the forest existed, I felt the connection with a deep part in the world there.
However, the forest was destroyed in a long term, and only the process of the loss and its memory were kept in my mind. I am living in a place which is a little distant from there at the present day. When I look at the scenery in periphery of the city where I live, I can see a new contemporary scenery which overlaps with the past scenery.
I keep walking and roaming around the place until it leads me to my destination.
And the subdued light is shining on the space which illuminates my memory in the past.
At that time, I realize that I can regain the connection with the world."

The last couple of weeks

As I was lying in bed last night, I composed a truly charming blog entry, but unfortunately I didnt get up to write it, instead I thought I would remember.... Well we all know how that goes..., so today I am falling over every word and sentences seem to be too long to make sense - but I will try anyway.
Last week I had the pleasure to fly to New Zealand for a workshop with Todd Hido and Bruce Gilden, who unfortunately couldn't make it. Instead Paul Graham was kind enough to interrupt his holiday and drop in for a morning session. I enjoy listening artists talk about their work, learn about their process - how they make sense of their pictures and ultimately learn something about them. I have always enjoyed Paul's bleached out "American Night" but I never really understood the relationship in that series. Hearing him speak about his work I have gained a valuable insight into his image making, editing and exhibiting process. Harvey Benge who organised this workshop along with Neil Cameron shared with us his passion on publishing and presented some of his published books.
But I would like to return to Todd Hido - I discovered his website maybe two years ago and was instantly in love with his images along with the text by A. M. Homes. It is funny how we are drawn to images we are ultimately aiming to achieve. I have been looking at his new book "A road divided" for about forever, but havnt had the funds to purchase it yet. It is on top of the list which seems to be getting constantly longer and longer.
Todd is a very generous and gracious teacher and seeing his contact sheets, plus hearing him talk about his work, you get a sense of his passion, which translate into stunning images - which over the next few years (in my humble opinion) will sky rocket. He is currently showing "Fragmented Narratives" at Silverstein I believe an absolute must go to exhibition if you are in NY (January 06 - February 12). Wish I was, but I am as far as one can get from NY.

At the workshop we had the opportunity to look through lots of books and my two absolute favorite were Alec Soth "Broken Manual" and Todd Hido's "A road divided". They are both stunning in their execution, luxuriate, designed with lots of care and elegance. You simple never want to let them out of your hands. They both use high quality paper, the images are enchanting and captivating and the concept an adventure. "Broken Manual" comes with a price tag of $950 - which unfortunately is out of my reach, to ever own such a book, so it was bliss to hold it in my hands.

Another bonus was to got to know some amazing NZ artists and I hope to share their work here over the coming weeks.

Finally I would like to thank Regional Arts Victoria and the lovely people who work there - for supporting me with a grant and make this workshop in NZ possible. Without this grant, I would not have been able to go to workshop, learn about the art of photography, editing and hopefully finding a way to get my images in front of more people.

Mutton and milk

When I was 19 I started traveling the world and stopped when I was 25 to settle in Australia. So I havnt had a chance to travel per se for a while, but still remember that feeling of freedom, of waking up in a new place, not knowing where to go next, of great happiness and daily adventures (happy to report this hasn't changed). Tammy Law takes us to the "Grasslands, Inner Mongolia" where she spent some time with a local family. And it seems her images from the present are already haunted by their future.

Even a mouse can be lonely

Yesterday I stumbled upon Walker Pickering's "Parable of a mouse" and was delighted. Reading images is like deciphering poetry... sometimes we do not have to break them down, take them apart in order to appreciate them. I have seen many dress up/costume images, but these images stand out from the crowd. They inspired me to make up all kinds of adventures I could take it with me.

Every new year comes with a lot of new dreams and inspiration. Today I became aware of John Maloof's blog Vivian Maier - Her discovered work and like most of you I like a good mystery, big dreams and seeing it all happen. Vivian was an incredible artist and thanks to John's hard work we can see her work now. John is also trying to raise funds to make a documentary, so head over and help make the project a reality. I am a little sad that Vivian probably never received much attention while she was still alive, but at the same time it inspires me. These days I think everyone wants to be a superstar, a hero and hopefully without working too hard and in record time... What inspires me about her work is that she loved what she did - she had a sense of humor, an amazing eye for details and she took images for herself. I absolutely love that she had 100's of undeveloped rolls of film just sitting there. I believe the act of taking the photograph was what inspired her and after that moment had passed - she (maybe) didnt care. She never had to worry about selling her images, finding a gallery, etc, she just took her images and (hopefully) was happy. I am sure - vee4ry so often she would have wondered why she continued to take images, but she did and thankfully never stopped. She simply did what she wanted to do and what she did best - take photos and now thanks to John dedication he is sharing her work.

Sorry for my absence in the last couple of weeks... no real excuses at hand, other than I designed a book of our new house (well actually more of the surrounds) for my parents for xmas and it took longer than expected - as most things do. I love it that in our minds we can think about all the great projects we like to do and they are done as quickly as we can dream them up, but if we begin the project in earnest, well... it always takes much longer.

New UYW issue

The other weekend I went to an exhibition opening and whilst enjoying a glass of champagne and the paintings around me I tried to imagine a world without art. I simply couldn’t, or better said, I wouldn’t let myself imagine such a depressing world. Art is varied and whilst we all have such different tastes it is simply a necessity. Every time I think of giving up - I imagine my world without my cameras... and without art – and I think I would have to go and see a psychologist instead, but I prefer looking through the view finder and creating to sitting on a couch.

This month I invited five artists who could not be more different in their style of photography, but each one of them delighted my eyes and heart in a different way. They all use their BW photography as an entrance to unknown worlds. Worlds of mystery, beauty, delight and joy - time and time again. They are completely different in details and are engaging us in a distinctive development of their ideas. Their simplicity transforms into something memorable and creates a possibility. So to finish off this great year I invited

Why did I make it an exclusive BW issue? In the middle of the year, I spent a couple of days in Rome and stayed with Fabio Severo. His knowledge of photography and BW inspired me no end and I invited him to write the foreword, to share his knowledge on this subject from a different point of view.

Looking outward

On saturday while there was a power failure I finally got around to tidying my office. The key is to sort everything and eleminate anything you do not need. You know how it is once you loose control, your study it will stay like that for a long while... Tim Davis "Office" images have a simplicity combined with an abundance of beautiful colours. And as Albert Einstein said: "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler."

Habits of dreaming

Natural history

I came across Kim Boske's work in the new Foam magazine and simply had to look up her website. I was rather delighted to come across her series "decay can be very slow". I am drawn to these images as I get to experience nature in slow time. I can look and study these animals for as long as I wish - without them simply vanishing into thin air. Her images provide us with a lot of information - past - present - and it can take a while to be able to register the details. Not hidden, but one has to look closer to find those treasures.

Our garden

Ok, so it has been a bit quiet here over the last month but I thought I show you why. Well we moved into this new house in the country and our garden is 10 times bigger - well definitely bigger then the tiny one we had in the city. Dont get me wrong - it is not huge, but to look after 1000sqm is enough to keep me happily busy. A couple of month ago I took these - wandering around and discovering all the plants. As always, it is interesting to look back, because since - our garden has turned into a jungle and keeping up with it - is a battle I enjoy.

There is so much great information available that it is hard to find time for anything else. Have a look at the new Ahorn magazine. While there, maybe read the great and insightful interview with Todd Hido. Then I found an interesting video with Roger Ballen, part of DVAfoto blog, which is also on the list of favorite photo bloggers on Wired’s Raw File. And dont forget to have a look at this incredible video by Aaron Huey on TED about his project on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. There is no end to great images & stories, but sometimes it is good to shut down the computer and step away from it. So... I am off to the market and then to take some more images of the rain.

I have been researching infra red techniques and images and came across Richard Mosse's "Infra". I have never seen such amazing infra reds, that I had to find out more. So, after more research I found two great interviews here and here. And the irony of this is, that after all this research I discovered that the film is no longer available.

Expats

"Another Country" is the first book of photographs devoted to the British in France by Rip Hopkins. Of his work he says: "I find myself behaving differently when speaking each language. In English, I am calmer than in French. I often catch myself suppressing emotions, whereas in French I let them go. Discussions in English tend to be pragmatic and an outcome is expected, while in French, issues tend to be abstract and I toy with ideas with no real conclusion in mind. Hence, I can be more British in English and more French in French."

"I’ve spent all my life trying to run away from myself": Joel Thomas Grant (32) left his home in Bath at the age of 15 and ran away to live here in 1992. Adopted by both British and French communities, he is known as Joël by the French and Tom by the British. He is a builder most of the time. Bogs (9) is half Beauceron, half Rhodesian Ridgeback. He wants to stay.

"I can’t help thinking that life may be better in England" : Jeanne Chapman came from Abu Dhabi in 1997. Prior to that she lived between London and West Africa. Jeanne was a dancer with the Ballet Rambert. She might go back to England.

"It doesn’t matter where you go, you always take yourself": Aaron Blond (47) came in 1986 from Norfolk. He previously worked with his father in the family publishing company and is now a builder. He doesn’t know whether he will go back.

"We make our own life": Peter Whitehouse (76) has had holiday houses in the area with his partner Ted Moore for over 30 years. Growing up in London and Surrey, he then lived and worked with Ted as an architect in Lagos, Nigeria from 1956, before settling here permanently in 2005. Rain (11) is an Italian Greyhound, Dune (12) is a Saluki, and Wallis (11) is a Pug inherited from their friend, Eric Boyes. They are all here to stay.

"Travel broadens your horizons": Graeme Wallace (48) grew up in Aberdeen and came here from Tripoli, Libya in 2007. He lives and works in the Château Mas de Montet with his partner Richard Stimson. He previously taught English and worked in various places around the world, especially in the Middle East. He will play it by ear over whether or not he stays, but in the unlikely event of leaving, he would return either to Britain or Libya.

One year, eleven issues & 65 artists

How quickly time passes. I am very excited to present you with a double issue in collaboration with Andrés Marroquín Winkelmann this month. I featured Andrés in December last year and staying in contact we decided to put together a double feature.

But before I introduce the artists in this edition I wish to say thank you to everyone who helped make UYW possible. A year ago I started UYW and it has been a pleasure working with everyone. If I had a Gallery, these works would have graced the walls and I would have shared a glass of wine with you. While I have not been able to realize a printed version or an exhibition yet, UYW leaves behind a permanent Exhibition - white pages organized like a gallery.

I do not think Baltimore would be an easy city to photograph, but I think Daniel Shea's little narrative - he shot on and off over a few months, doesn't leave us only with poverty stricken images, but subtly manages to add more character to the city and it's people of Baltimore.

Oh the simplicity and clarity of Andreas Gefeller is outstanding. I came across his folio via 500 photographers and after watching his video I went to his website to see more of his images. A few years ago I attempted to photograph our tram lines - there seem to be a about a million in Melbourne - but I have to confess, mine never looked this great.

Study and investigation

I would love to be able to study and see these delicate prints by Charles Grogg up close. His series "Reconstructions" - platinum palladium print on handmade Japanese gampi, sewn on Japanese washi, are an inspiration. They seem so honest & quiet that I feel I could study them a long time and still not know any more. He is currently showing new work at the new Wallspace Gallery in Santa Barbara. (Via)

Traditional medicine

A while ago I designed an Annual Report for the Chinese Medicine Registration Board of Victoria and as they did not have any money for photography I offered to take some for free. I was fortunate enough that Vlado Krstevski, a Chinese medicine practitioner, allowed me to visit his clinic. I was in heaven - he had bookshelves full of jars filled with traditional Chinese medicine. You can imagine my delight as I delved into the landscapes of healing properties.

Refugees are worldwide problem that shouldn't stop at any nation's borders, so when I received an email by Sara Forrest I was more then interested to have a look at her images. She shot her series "New roots for refugees" only a couple of weeks ago where she concentrated on a group of female refugee farmers and their families (from Somalia, Burundi, Sudan, Burma, etc.) who have been resettled in an urban section of Kansas City, Kansas in the United States. Her purpose of the project was to create awareness for refugees new to the US, to focus on urban agriculture and community based markets and to highlight the beautiful and enduring spirits of these female refugees. Her images are perfectly exquisite still life's and her colors present us with the essence of vulnerability.

I am just thrilled. I got to know Joost a tiny bit over emails after he subscribed and in the process I learned he was a big ipad fan... so I asked him to tell me about his experience with UYW. I have been looking into making UYW ipad friendly, but hmm can't really afford one at the moment... so he made this for me. Thank you Joost - I am touched. It gives me a great indication how it looks and what I need to change. It is amazing and I am often blown away by technology and how fast it moves. In 1989 I started a typical typesetter apprenticeship with lead type and no computers.... Do you have any idea how long it took to change the smallest thing? Forever.

So how absolutely amazing are Josef Schulz's "Uebergang" images? Actually all of his images. Firstly I wanted to showcase his "terraform" series, but then, well how could I go past these ones? I used to love stopping at this little huts/rooms, show my little passport and be off on a new adventure with languages I didnt understand, but got to eat pasties and drink wines I loved... Anyway I am getting a little side tracked here... “Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.” ( Peter De Vries) I know sometimes I feel like a big happy hippo, ohh isnt this nice and this and what about this etc, but you know, for every ohh I also look through 100's of website, well which frankly aren't, so when I do find a great one, my heart skips a beat and I believe again.

The other day I received a subscription for UYW by Virginia Woods-Jack and we started a lovely email dialogue. It still amazes me how easy it is to meet new people, learn about their passions, hear about their new projects and generally get a feel of who they are... A few days later I received these images from her "Gazing" series. Of her work Virginia says: "Interacting with our reflection is usually a function of brushing our teeth, combing our hair, shaving etc. I wanted to know what would happen if we actually stopped and looked? What would we see and how would we feel about what we saw? I decided to place some parameters around these works namely a time period was important element as well as an unbroken time period. I asked the subjects to look at themselves in a mirror that they would most often look at themselves in for a period of roughly 5 minutes. This is long enough to go past the initial awkwardness and not too long so as to loose interest. I shot one roll of film, 12 frames. At the end of the shoot I asked them to write in a sketch book any thoughts or feelings that may have arisen whilst looking at themselves. Every individual had their own experience however, there were some similarities in the age groups and sexes with how they actually interacted with their reflections. My observations of how they behaved however, didn’t give any clue to the thoughts and feelings they revealed in their writings. Their words went beyond the surface and opened up the person behind the gaze. The hand written texts, the way they wrote on the page all became integral to this project the words and the pictures complementing and enhancing one another. This marriage of image and words builds pictures of fragility, strength, time of life, self awareness and blissful ignorance of self."

I am not good at snap shots. I tried it in Hamburg, but when I got home I deleted most of them. These images were taken around Tivoli (2 hours from Rome by bus) and this is when I realised that my travels are for trees (along with friends, sun, good wine etc). I never seem to get tired of their form, sizes or shapes and am committed to continue to capture their elegant calm.

Every time I design a new issue of UYW I don’t find time to do anything else.
Sometimes I forget to exhale, eat lunch, check the time, walk the dog, but I never forget my coffee. When everything is almost finished, there is still something left to write about. Putting two words to paper takes me almost as long as the design process. So forgive me, but I will keep writing about aspects of time, hopefully without repeating myself. "Somewhere between the shores" is the stunning new series by Jan Otto Schreiber. Last year he decided to explore Australia. He bought a ticket aboard a cargo ship and embarked on a two months journey. By the time he reached the Australian shore, he had taken over 250 shoots of the sea, ships and islands passing by. When I was 19 I wanted to do just that - escape on a cargo - destination unknown, but being a girl... well it never happened. I just love the meditative calmness, creamy colour and the adventure of it.

When I was in Rome I had the pleasure to stay with Fabio who showed me Rome by Vespa (the only way one should experience Rome) and introduced me to Alessandro Imbriaco amongst other friends. Over a few beers, we laughed, discussed photography, art residences and of cause Rome. These images are part of his series "Idroscalo". I adore his colour sense and I imagine, these images could easily to be part of a movie - unfolding and taking us through a journey through the urban landscapes of Rome.

A while ago I came upon Stratis Vogiatzis website and his images made my heart sing. I have to confess at the moment I do not see many images which grab me and I am not sure if it is me - as I do not have time as usual to ponder, think, question etc. It requires a lot of energy to "see", find and to be amazed, but when I come upon great images it is not a question as they speak to me instantly. It is always easy to see beauty, even if one is tired.

Hmm, so the new UYW issue is half finished, but will be delayed for a little bit, as I am currently moving house and trying to finish my design projects before I leave for Europe next week. I can not wait. Time to see my family again, hang out with friends, dream, take photos and try to come up with some grandiose plans for when I get back. Today I would like to share Dide - an online photography magazine. In this issue you will find a well written text by Fabio Severo - I simply adore his knowledge and writing on photography. His style draws me through language filled with poetry, to inform me about matters and leaves an energy behind which I know to be his enthusiasm and passion on the given subject.

True delight

Last week I received this gorgeous book from Metehan Özcan. It is a truly inspiring book, well printed and a great selection of his work.

"In his exhibition named as “Vacuum”, Metehan Ozcan focuses on abandoned spaces. The houses, streets, and parks in Ozcan’s photographs are haunted by a subject who has left; in other words they are under the influence of a vacuum of the absent subject. Even if these images do not contain a single human figure, they tell various stories. Astoundingly, Ozcan’s photographs, do not give references to despair, melancholia or nostalgia. At first glance, these images where the traces of subjectivity are submitted to the mercy of silence, darkness, humidity and dust may appear as a requiem for the modern space; but then again, Ozcan’s perspective constructs a reality in which “the return of the repressed” and “the immanent uncanniness of the space” are embraced. An after hour darkness, silence and stillness of a fairground which can only exist with the light, joy and laughter; or the house which submits itself to the growing jungle that it had been externalizing since from its very foundation do not signify “the death of the space”, but celebrate an “other” kind of “rebirth” with a new face."

I am not one to get up when it is still dark outside, but for the last 2 weeks I have been practicing early starts, so I can finish all the projects before I head off in two weeks - hurray. This morning I was tickled by Sylvain Cotte images along with his descriptions: (First image) "In 1986, Leon Grellutch became the first Belgian astronaut. Unfortunately, the trip sponsored by Jupiler will never see the day and Leon will land forever. He’s always visiting Belgian universities to give lectures about life on Mars."
(Second image) "Sergi Fuentes is the first Spanish to join the deceased ABA (Animal Basketball Association) in 1967. At the end of a summer of love which will stay in annals, he joins Detroit and his Pistons. During its first match, the mascot of the team annoys him accidentally just like that with piston. He will remain weak light for life." I love cyanotypes and seeing that I will move in 10 days and have a shed, well maybe I'll have to set up a dark room again. Sylvain is also selling 20 unique editions in the size of 14,8 x 21cm printed on 340gsm art paper.

Ever since I fell in love with contemporary dance I was interested to capture the movements we can not see. With trying to capture movement you constantly change between think, feel, think-feel and feel-think of all the different beginnings and endings. It is a constant play of interconnecting, overlapping and a transformational new beginning. Beginning again.

Mathematical Models of the Sublime (Dancehouse, 14 to 18 July 2010) is a new performance work from Walpole & Sister that takes the simple geometry of the number pi as a starting point for investigating the wonder of the universe and the limits of the human body.

Last week Max Sher a very talented photographer from St. Petersburg introduced himself with his series "KARS*"

“I changed from an amble to a round trot and arrived that evening at a Turkish village twelve miles from Kars. Having jumped down from my horse I wanted to enter the first hut, but the owner appeared in the doorway and pushed me away with a shower of abuse. I responded to his welcome with my whip. The Turk started bellowing; a crowd gathered. My guide, it seemed, had interceded on my behalf. I was shown a caravan-serai; I entered a large hut resembling a cattle shed; there was nowhere to spread my cloak. I demanded a horse. The Turkish headman came over to me. To all his incomprehensible words I gave the same reply: verbana at (give me a horse). The Turks would not agree. Finally I had the sense to show them money (which I should have done in the first place). A horse was brought immediately and I was given a guide. I rode along a wide valley, surrounded by hills. Soon I saw Kars, standing out white on one of them. My Turk kept pointing it out to me, repeating 'Kars, Kars!' and put his horse into a gallop. I followed him tormented by anxiety: it was in Kars that my fate would be decided".

New UYW Issue

You might remember Yaniv from the first edition of UYW. He generously curated the first half of this issue by inviting other journal makers to submit images. Most of the time they provide a platform for other artists to show their works through the virtual world of the web, but now he put them in the spot lights and exposes their personal works and ideas.

For my part, I invited five artists to share their dreams and desires by throwing themselves into a new project - they had two months to come up with anything they wanted... and now I am asking you to do the same - to try to sense, experience and feel their project’s rather than understand them. This may not be definitive. And it might present you with certain problems. In fact I’m sure it will. Try to treat these problems as minor distractions, a giggle of relief that rejuvenates your ability to keep sensing. This is backwards I know. But it might make you look, or feel differently, might open more possibilities for more meanings and connections, more interpretations. You don’t need me interpreting. Pretend I’m not here. Imagine. You can invent your own story. Full of fantastical adventures, or quiet sojourns. A whole library of thought, a box of dreams. A world of essays. Flying carpets and magic theory.

Yesterday I received these great images by Tjorven Bruneel. About this series he says: "In an age where progress races by like bullet train, railway companies cannot stay behind. As with every wave of modernisation, heart-crushing demolitions happen. The outside of these house are like blank faces and I wonder what we can expect to find inside. Last week we found out that our house went on the market to be sold, so instead of waiting to be kicked out - we went on a mission to find us a new home. For the last couple of years we have been thinking that it could be lovely to move to the country, so instead of eating way to many easter eggs we hunted for a new home in Castlemaine. This reminded me of the project I started last year, where I made a point of taking photos of all the houses I could not afford in the area where we currently live.

Last week was absolutely crazy, but we managed to design a paper set in the lane way for my partners PHD performance and even managed to keep the rain at bay 2 hours before the performance. And while I talk about spaces, I would like to share these stunning and yet so minimalistic images by Anne Kathrin Greiner.

While I was crunching up paper for Paul's upcoming PHD dance performance next week, I relalised that it must be time for another post. A while ago I received these lovely images from Sarah Girner. About her project she says: "For the last year I have been working on a project called The Transience of Things, which focuses on Estate Sales in Westchester County. The sales strike me as incredibly interesting because it is the last time that the homes (be that a childhood home or a place you lived your entire life) exist in all their parts. I walk through the rooms and I can piece together the owners' lives bit by bit. The sales are usually related to death, divorce or a move. What interests me further is that these particular houses are all located in affluent Westchester County where many of the interiors have not changed since the 1950's. The flight to the suburbs and Cheever and Yates come immediately to mind. So does Betty Friedan. In some of the houses the frantic color-coding of furniture and wallpaper reminds me of The Problem That Has No Name."

I always enjoy "quiet" images which leave me with plenty of space to think and dream. Next week will be a absolutely crazy with setting up the set, so I can not promise that I will be able to post anything.

Passions

I adore people with a passion. I do not necessarily need to share it, but their enthusiasm makes their project/interest so interesting and exciting that it is easy to understand what draws them to it in the first place. So when I came upon Aaron Wojack's "Pigeon Flying" I was once again reminded how infectious passions can be. I think he did a great job portraying this special relationship between the birds and their keepers and whilst I will not take up pigeon keeping, I will certainly look at them a little differently knowing their history.

Whilst I try to have a look at all of the submissions (and get back to you), sometimes I simply run out of time and hope that I will get to them later. These rich and intensely colored images are from Marko Tardito from France. I can almost hear the sounds of the kids, smell the seawater and engulf myself on a little adventure.

Love of poppies

Last November I had the pleasure to travel to Tasmania to take some images of drought resistant grass fields. It was not long before I discovered these fields of white and I simply had to find a way to get to that property. I adore poppies and have never seen white ones before, so you can imagine my delight, standing amongst these gorgeous flowers - I felt like Alice in wonderland.

I love fridays, and saturdays, wednesday, well actually all days, but I am happy for it to be friday today. I am off to a meeting, then the market, a dance dress rehearsal and then I have a date with my partner. Perfect ending to a busy week. Have a great weekend.

Every time I think I do not have enough time for UYW and my blog, I get inspired all over again by all the artists out there, constantly producing amazing images. These images are from Yann Orhan and I simply adore their softness which lead me into a story through the wilderness.
